
Can a few new IR heaters actually speed up an old blow molding machine?
If you’ve got an old PET blow molding machine on your floor, you know the frustration. You’re trying to hit your cycle times, but the machine just isn’t keeping up. Most people assume the motor is tired or the blower is the problem. But here’s the thing: usually, the real bottleneck is just the oven. If your preforms aren’t getting hot enough—or if the heat is patchy—you have to slow everything down. Otherwise, you end up with thin walls or that annoying pearlescence that makes the bottles look cheap.
The secret is in the heat density
It comes down to how the heat actually hits the plastic. Standard lamps are fine, but high-output infrared (IR) elements change the whole vibe of the oven. We lean toward short-wave radiation because it doesn’t just sit on the surface; it punches deeper into the PET and does it faster. Imagine swapping a basic quartz tube for a high-density halogen element. You’re basically packing more heat into every square inch. This means the preform hits that “sweet spot” (the glass transition temperature) much quicker.
Getting the hardware right
Most of the time, this is a simple swap. We usually stick with R7s or Sk15 bases so they just drop right in. Just keep in mind that a 400V system is going to give you a different kind of punch than a 230V setup. I always recommend coated quartz tubes. The coating acts like a filter, making sure the heat matches what the PET actually wants to absorb. Less heat wasted, more heat in the plastic. But a word of caution: don’t just throw the highest wattage you can find in there. If you put a 2500W tube where a 1500W one used to be, you might fry your contactors or warp the oven frame. And check your fans. You’ll need enough airflow to move that extra heat out of the room.

Updating your heating elements is probably the fastest way to shave time off your cycle. The heat spreads evenly across the preform body. When the heat is consistent, you can finally stop babying the machine. You can crank up the speed and trust that the bottles won’t deform. It’s a simple shortcut to getting more bottles out the door.
