
Why your old bathroom heater is probably failing (and what actually works)

The secret to keeping water out
If you see a “high IP rating” on a box, it just means the thing is actually sealed. Instead of leaving the electronics exposed, the heating element is tucked away inside a quartz or ceramic envelope. It stops that annoying “sizzle” you hear in cheap heaters. Plus, it feels different. Traditional lamps try to heat up all the air in the room, which takes forever. IR is different. It sends heat directly to the towel. You feel it immediately. No waiting around in a cold room.
Finding the sweet spot
There is a bit of a balancing act here. We want these things to dry your towels fast, but we don’t want them to turn your bathroom into a sauna. If you put a massive, high-wattage unit in a tiny, enclosed shower room, it’s going to get way too hot. You’ll end up switching it off because you’re sweating, but your towels are still damp. It’s all about matching the power to the size of your space.
Getting it installed right
One quick heads-up: don’t just plug these into any old outlet. You really need a dedicated GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) for safety. Because these units pack a lot of heat into a small space, they put a steady load on your wiring. If the cables are too thin, you’ll notice the heat dropping off. It’s a simple fix, but it makes a huge difference in how the unit performs over time. The best part? Since the IR tech is sealed tight, you don’t have to worry about the humidity eating away at the internals. They just last longer. Simple as that.
