
Can New IR Lamps Actually Speed Up an Old SBO Machine?
If you’re running an older Sidel SBO, you’ve probably hit that frustrating wall. You want to push the cycle times faster, but the heating oven just can’t keep up. It feels like the machine has reached its limit. But here’s the thing: the machine itself usually isn’t the problem. It’s usually just the lamps. The secret is heat density. When you ditch generic tubes for lamps that actually match your specs, the PET preform absorbs energy differently. We’re talking about short-wave radiation here. It hits the plastic harder and deeper. By bumping up the wattage per millimeter, the preform reaches that critical “glass transition temperature” much faster. That means you can crank up the speed without worrying about those annoying under-heated bottoms or walls that look uneven. Getting the fit right You don’t want a project that requires a blowtorch and a prayer. A good replacement should just drop right in. We use quartz glass with special coatings that push the heat forward into the preform, instead of letting it waste away against the oven walls. And since we stick to standard R7s or SK15 connectors, you can just wire them up and get back to work. No hacking into your sockets. One quick warning:keep an eye on your voltage. If you put 400V lamps into a 230V system, you’ll never get the heat you need. On the flip side, if you over-volt them? You’ll burn through your new lamps in a few days. The catch Look, more heat isn’t a free lunch. Higher wattage lamps dump a lot more ambient heat into the oven cabinet. If your cooling fans are caked in dust or your ventilation is struggling, you might overheat your electronics. Just double-check that your airflow can handle the extra load before you go full throttle. At the end of the day, swapping these lamps is the cheapest way to squeeze more bottles per hour out of an old frame. It beats buying a brand-new machine any day.
